Mark Cassidy and Suzanne Hersh began collaborating on independent projects in the mid-eighties after graduating from University of Toronto’s UC Drama Program. They moved to Kingston, Ont. to attend Queen’s Artist in the Community Program, and it was on that Lake Ontario shore that Threshold was born. Soon, the company became known for its passionate, full-bodied exploration of the verbal and visual, social and poetic, and for its unique blend of cutting edge performance and community engagement, receiving operating funding from the Canada Council and becoming resident company of the Baby Grand Theatre.
Relocating closer to collaborators back in Toronto, Threshold has continued to create productions which draw on diverse sources: new scripts, classic novels, places, poetry, letters and short stories. And these shows continue to be presented in a range of performance styles and environments. What characterizes Threshold is that we were not easily characterized–following our instincts into the unknown and challenging preconceptions of what the theatrical experience can be. What remains consistent is a commitment to create intimate, engaging and provocative theatre.
We look forward to continuing this journey of inquiry and imagination, language and sensuality, multiplicity and idiosyncrasy, with our fellow artists, audiences, and community partners!
