Synopsis

A woman sits alone in a hospital room, waiting… she lives between rings, everything hangs in the balance. In La Voix Humaine we overhear the final phone call between a woman and her ex-lover. This disabled reading of Poulenc’s 1958 opera considers a facet of chronic illness, asking, ‘what happens when one’s life becomes defined by pain, precarity, and isolation?’ In the light of changes happening in our healthcare systems across the country, this piece seeks to explore the intersection of gender and disability, bringing into focus the human cost of these structural failures. Performed in French with English surtitles. (fringetoronto.com)
